WINDOWS users: YOU MUST HAVE DIRECT-X-8 (or higher) FROM MICROSOFT TO RUN!
Also, to use ATC speech, you must often turn down the hardware
acceleration on your sound card! If you still do not get verbal speech
from ATC, download speech synthesis. Mac users are good to go with stock G4's and G5's.
The Lowdown:
X-Plane 8.x is a 3-D accelerated
program, which means that it needs a decent CPU and a 3-D accelerator
card to run. 3-D accelerator cards are designed specifically to do
high-speed graphics, so they work many times faster than your CPU ever
could. The 2 languages of 3-D accelerator cards are OpenGL and
Direct-3D.
All Laminar Research software uses OpenGL. You must therefore have a 3-D accelerator card that can run OpenGL to use our latest software.
The faster your CPU, the better the frame-rate, so get a fast Pentium or Mac if possible.
NOTE:
THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ABOVE FOR VERSION 8 ARE FOR RUNNING WITH THE
GENERATION-7 SCENERY (an option for version 8 of X-Plane). HOWEVER, IF
YOU TURN ON THE "GENERATION-8 SCENERY" OPTION IN THE "RENDERING
OPTIONS" SCREEN, THEN YOU DOUBLE THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS on the
Macintosh! All that detail takes a good chunk of RAM! (The Windows
machines are currently able to cache the data away using less RAM, so
the system requirements do not go up for Windows machines using the
Generation-8 scenery)
Where Can I get a good MACINTOSH for X-Plane?
www.Apple.com. I use the latest G5 with 1024 meg of RAM.
Where can I get a good WINDOWS MACHINE OR JUST JOYSTICK for X-Plane?
Digital Edge (a local company with a good X-Plane system)
Windows Joysticks and Yokes
No joystick is required. You can fly with the mouse or numeric keypad.
But to really be realistic you need a joystick or yoke. Any modern USB
joystick should be fine for both Mac and Windows.
- If
you want a full set-up with ergonomics just like the real aircraft, I
recommend a CH-Products Flight Sim Yoke with CH-Products rudder pedals.
This will give you yoke, pedals, and general ergonomics of the real
aircraft if the real aircraft is flown with a yoke. - If you are
more interested in flying aircraft that are STICK RATHER THAN YOKE
OPERATED (such as fighters and helicopters) then you should probably
get any CH-Products joystick and CH-Products rudder pedals.
